Overview
You step into the boots of Allied spy William "B.J." Blazkowicz, captured and thrown into the dungeon of Castle Wolfenstein. Armed initially with nothing but a combat knife and a Luger pistol, you must navigate a seemingly endless, labyrinthine Nazi fortress to secure your escape. The gameplay strips away the slow, methodical pace of 80s PC gaming, replacing it with pure, adrenaline-fueled action.
Players must gun down SS guards, attack dogs, and grotesque mutants, while scouring the stone walls for hidden push-panels containing stolen Nazi treasure and desperately needed medical kits. The descent into madness eventually culminates in a legendary, surreal showdown with a dual-chaingun-wielding Mecha-Hitler.

The Ray-Casting Revolution
John Carmack's custom engine didn't use true 3D polygons, which were too slow for fast action at the time. Instead, it used a brilliant math trick called "ray-casting" to draw 2D walls that scaled smoothly as the player moved. This allowed the game to run at blindingly fast speeds even on standard 286 and 386 processors, completely changing the perception of what PC action games could be.
The Shareware Empire
Released via the Apogee shareware model, the first episode ("Escape from Wolfenstein") was distributed for free on BBS networks across the globe. It was so addictive that it generated incredible mail-order sales for the remaining episodes, effectively inventing the modern First-Person Shooter genre and turning the young team at id Software into rockstars overnight.
