Behind The Scenes

The Multitasking Control Revolution
Warcraft introduced massive quality-of-life adjustments to real-time strategy controls. Unlik *Dune II*, where players could only issue orders to a single unit at a time, Warcraft allowed players to select and command groups of up to four units simultaneously by holding down the shift key or drag-boxing. While this sounds restrictive by modern standards, in 1994 it felt like an incredible upgrade in tactical macro speed, allowing for actual coordinated flanking maneuvers and synchronized vanguard charges.

Dial-Up Modem Skirmish Infrastructure
Beyond its rich dual-narrative campaigns, Warcraft''s killer feature was its native support for head-to-head multiplayer skirmishes via local networks, null-modem serial cables, or direct dial-up telephone links. Screaming down a 14.4k telephone line while managing a real-time base rush introduced an entirely new competitive rush to PC gaming. It proved that the true future of the PC real-time strategy platform rested squarely on outsmarting a live human opponent over network connections.
