Overview

Core Design delivered one of the most culturally significant titles in gaming history with the arrival of Lara Croft in Tomb Raider. Navigating deep, treacherous ruins across Peru, Greece, and Egypt, the game combined smooth third-person platforming mechanics with complex environmental puzzle designs.

Players leaped across deep caverns, dodged ancient traps, and fought off predatory wildlife, all framed by a wonderful cinematic score that brought a real sense of grand adventure to the screen.

Behind The Scenes

Tomb Raider's complex spatial exploration was built using a unique grid-based level design method. The game world was constructed out of uniform 3D blocks, allowing the engine to calculate Lara Croft's collision states and leap distances down to the pixel.

This grid system let the developers implement a dynamic camera tracking system that adjusted smoothly based on environmental obstructions, setting a baseline standard for early 3D third-person platformers.
