Behind The Scenes

The Persistent Living Core Concept
The single most innovative feature introduced in Panzer General was the concept of the persistent "Core" army. Your tanks, infantry battalions, artillery batteries, and fighter squadrons weren''t just disposable tokens for a single map; they gained individual combat experience, earned honors, and carried over across a massive branching campaign. If a veteran Tiger tank battalion that you nurtured since Poland got cut off and destroyed in the fields of Russia, the loss felt personal and devastating, drastically shifting how tactical risks were calculated.

Demystifying the Wargame Hex
SSI successfully stripped away the mechanical fluff of traditional tabletop wargames while retaining their core complexity. The interface gave players immediate visual feedback on complex calculations like terrain defense bonuses, entrenchment levels, weather modifiers, and supply lines simply by hovering the cursor. This allowed players to focus entirely on macro military strategy—like executing classic pincer movements or utilizing tactical bombers to suppress artillery before an armored push—rather than wrestling with math formulas.
