Overview

Simtex and MicroProse perfected space-based strategy gaming with the launch of Master of Orion II: Battle at Antares. Tasked with managing a custom space-faring species, players managed star systems, balanced complex economic lines, and commanded massive fleets in turn-based tactical space combat.

Introducing custom empire creation systems, hero commander units, and a menacing threat in the extra-dimensional Antarans, MOO2 established a masterclass template for space strategy games that is still emulated today.

Behind The Scenes

Developers Steve Barcia and Ken Burd optimized the turn-based AI processing routines using an advanced weight-matrix algorithm. This allowed the computer opponents to evaluate multi-planet production lines, technology research paths, and fleet placement options simultaneously without lagging the game clock.

The team also built a highly efficient UI layering structure that packed detailed galactic statistics, system windows, and fleet controls onto a single screen for smooth empire management.
