The realm of Cronos has been entirely enslaved by the second of the three mythical Serpent Riders—Korax. Utilizing a dark, reality-warping staff, Korax has corrupted the military, religious, and academic orders of the world. Standing as the last line of defense, three heroes must navigate corrupted temples, swamp wilderness fortresses, and crystal dimensions.

The Class Selection Paradigm Shift
Hexen completely altered standard FPS combat by forcing players to choose between three distinct character classes before launch: Baratus the Warrior, Parias the Cleric, or Daedolon the Mage. This single design change completely transformed item utility, movement patterns, and tactical approaches across the game world.
The Hub Level Scripting Revolution
Instead of clear start-to-finish levels, Hexen developed a non-linear hub design pattern. A primary anchor level would contain multiple branching portals leading to sub-maps. Pulling a heavy steel lever deep inside a swamp level wouldn''t exit the stage; it would trigger an engine script message stating "A door has opened on the Citadel," forcing players to backtrack.
