Overview
New World Computing redefined the boundaries of fantasy strategy with the release of Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Succession War. Dropping players directly into a bitter civil war for the throne of Enroth, the narrative pits the noble Prince Roland against his tyrannical, necromancer brother Archibald. Players must choose an allegiance, manage critical resource mines, expand massive castle fortresses, and command mythical armies across a highly addictive, turn based campaign map.
The game represents a monumental technological leap for the franchise, abandoning restricted color limits for a breathtaking, vibrant high color SVGA presentation where every combat arena and castle screen looks like a hand painted canvas. Immortalized by its revolutionary, fully operatic soundtrack composed by Paul Romero, Heroes II balances tactical hex grid warfare with rich world building to stand as an absolute masterpiece of the golden age of PC gaming.

Behind The Scenes
Jon Van Caneghem oversaw a complete rewriting of the graphical asset loader routines, moving from the old 8-bit, 256-color limit of the previous engine to a rich 16-bit high-color palette format. This allowed artists to use detailed shading and intricate hand-painted frames across units and landscapes.
The development team also implemented a highly structured hex-grid combat tracking loop that accurately evaluated terrain penalties, range modification factors, and specialized unit counter-attacks instantly during battles.
