Overview

Westwood Studios took the real-time strategy world by storm with Command & Conquer: Red Alert, a brilliant alternate history prequel to the original C&C. Pitting the Allied forces against a massive Soviet invasion machine in a world where World War II never happened, the game delivered lightning-fast tactical combat packages.

Featuring iconic military assets like Tesla coils, Chronoshifts, and Attack Dogs, all paired with Frank Klepacki's pulse-pounding soundtrack *Hell March*, Red Alert became an absolute multiplayer juggernaut.

Behind The Scenes

Westwood optimized their asset rendering routines to handle dozens of independent sprite animations simultaneously in high-resolution 640x480 SVGA modes. They rewrote the multiplayer network code to run natively over Windows 95 WINSOCK TCP/IP wrappers alongside standard IPX protocols.

This change laid the groundwork for Westwood Online, allowing thousands of strategy fans to find matches over early residential internet setups without needing complex third-party terminal configurations.
