Overview

Sid Meier and MicroProse perfected the turn-based empire building framework with the release of Civilization II. Shifting the presentation model from the flat bird's eye view of the original game to a gorgeous isometric 2.5D graphical engine, the sequel tasked players with leading a chosen culture from primitive nomadic roots all the way into the space age.

With heavily expanded research technology trees, intricate diplomacy controls, and new tactical military variables like firepower and hit points, Civ II set a gold standard for strategy gaming.

Behind The Scenes

Designer Brian Reynolds focused production resources heavily on improving artificial intelligence behaviors and data modularity. For the first time, nearly all game parameters including unit rules, technology prerequisites, and descriptive text fields were stored externally in plain text `.txt` files.

This design choice allowed early modding communities to completely rewrite the rule parameters and construct complex scenarios without needing to touch the compiled engine code.
