Behind The Scenes

The Living World of Virtual Theatre
To elevate the game above standard static point-and-click frameworks, Revolution Software utilized their proprietary Virtual Theatre engine. This script architecture granted NPCs an unprecedented level of autonomy. Instead of standing completely frozen in a room waiting for the player to click on them, characters walked between districts, performed daily mechanical tasks, and interacted with each other. This gave the dystopian urban environments of Union City a tangible sense of a living, breathing mechanical society.

Dave Gibbons'' Visual Influence
The striking aesthetic layout of the game''s towering, polluted, multi-tiered cityscape was hand-drawn directly by comic book royalty Dave Gibbons (famous for his world-building work on *Watchmen*). Gibbons drew background layers and character concepts on paper, which were then painstakingly digitized and colored pixel-by-pixel by Revolution''s art team. The game box itself included a physical comic book illustrated by Gibbons that served as both a narrative prologue and a component of the copy protection array.
