Overview

Take to the blood-stained skies of World War I in this definitive aerial combat simulator. Players can enlist in either the British Royal Flying Corps or the German Imperial Air Service, embarking on a dynamic campaign spanning from 1915 to the war's end in 1918.

You begin flying primitive, flimsy scouts and eventually work your way up to legendary machines like the Sopwith Camel, SPAD XIII, and the iconic Fokker Dr.I triplane. Missions range from standard patrols and dogfights to terrifying "balloon busting" runs and hunting massive Zeppelins. If you survive long enough, you will encounter—and be hunted by—famous historical aces, culminating in a showdown with Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron himself.

Behind The Scenes

A Marriage of Technology and Story
In 1990, Sierra On-Line (famous for their point-and-click adventure games) acquired the development studio Dynamix. Dynamix brought incredible 3D polygon programming expertise to the table. Red Baron was the magnificent result of this merger: it combined a cutting-edge 3D flight engine with Sierra's flair for narrative, history, and polished presentation.

Pioneering Features
The game was lightyears ahead of its time regarding immersion and AI.

  • Distinct AI Personalities: Enemy aces didn't just fly better; they flew with distinct historical tactics. Some were aggressive, while others would dive away if the odds were against them.
  • The Mission Recorder: Red Baron featured a revolutionary "VCR" system that allowed players to record their dogfights and play them back from any camera angle—a feature that wouldn't become standard in other games for a decade.
